follow contact [email protected] 01239 820164 address brithdir mawr, cilgwyn road, newport, pembrokeshire, sa42 0qj, uk ©2017 by brithdir mawr community. brithdir mawr community home news & updates visit/volunteer faqs history animals gardens woodlands courses & events bed & breakfast camping & glamping contact & find us donate shop meet us links, fun stuff & videos gallery tony and faith's roundhouse more welcome / croeso as stewards of this 80-acre farm, we try to live our lives working with rather than against nature: husbanding goats, ducks, chickens and bees to provide us with milk, eggs and honey; producing organic fruit and veg in polytunnels and large gardens. we coppice wood for fuel, bake bread, preserve produce, and use our own materials such as wood and willow for craftwork . we take care of the land, recycle and conserve resources, garden and farm according to organic principles, use compost loos and are off the grid for electricity and water. being a community is a large part of what we do. to sum up the rest; we are striving towards a life in which our footprints are as light as they can be. in the course of our communal and personal lives we choose to consider our decisions with these 3 principles in mind: sustainability to work towards a lifestyle that leaves the environment - both local and global - better, or at least no worse, at the end of our lives. living together to live such that the benefits of collective living outweigh the difficulties; so that working together is easier and more enjoyable than working separately; so that we will all flourish and feel at home. education to share and exchange skills and experience to help both others and ourselves move towards a more sustainable lifestyle. i'm celebrate brithdir mawr campaign!! brithdir mawr became a community in 1994 when julian and emma orbach purchased the property together with the land at auction. the focus of the community soon evolved to meeting as many of our needs as possible from the land and we now grow most of our own vegetables and fruit, plant and coppice our own fire wood and generate all of the electricity we use from the river, sun and the wind. since the early days many people have come and gone, some staying for just a short time, some for as long as 20 years. during this time brithdir mawr has welcomed many hundreds of visitors including friends and family, volunteers, course participants, event attendees and students from the bristol permaculture design and shift courses. most went away with very fond memories of this special land and having learnt something new about sustainable living, reducing their carbon footprint or growing food without the use of chemicals. we, in turn, have learnt from them and always seek to improve what we do here. our biggest challenge now is to save brithdir mawr community and safeguard this land into the future. the current landlord needs to sell the site by january 2020 but is very keen that the community continues and is, therefore, giving us first refusal. we have various income generating strategies planned such as..... providing bed and breakfast being a permaculture design course venue wild camping and glamping our own events such as seasonal fairs working with local schools hiring out the site for events or as a film location offering holistic treatments team building experiences brithdir tours film nights/pizza nights selling our own eco products an annual "slow dating" weekend apply for grants running youth camps being a training centre for land based and nature connection courses some of these ideas are already happening, others are still in the pipeline. finally, we will be launching a crowd fund campaign in 2018. if you would like to help us save brithdir mawr community we would love to hear from you. there are many ways you can get involved...
